The town of Lacco Ameno, located in the north-western side of the Island of Ischia, is the smallest one. Its name comes from the Greek lakkos, which means “stone”. The adjective ameno (“pleasant” in Italian) was added in the mid-1800s.
San Montano bay is a very fascinating corner. Its clear water has a green colour thanks to the vegetation which covers the towering rocky coasts embracing the bay. The bay is home to the well-known Negombo Thermal Park, which offers the possibility to relax in its numerous thermal pools or to take a swim and sunbathe on its private beach.
The symbol of the town – also enumerated among the symbols of the Island of Ischia – is Il Fungo (“the mushroom” in English). It is a large green tuff rock located in the port of Lacco Ameno. With its 10 meters in height, Il Fungo is well visible from the main street. It is probably a huge boulder plummeted off the Epomeo Mount. Over time, thanks to the wind and sea erosion, it has taken the peculiar shape of a mushroom.
